WEAV3D Inc. develops and produces state-of-the-art composite forming machinery and composite preform materials. The company is expanding and is hiring a full-time mechanical engineer to support the design, fabrication, and testing of WEAV3D’s composite forming machinery, with emphasis on improving production speed, energy efficiency, and production quality. The mechanical engineer position will work as a member of the machine design team, with guidance from the principal engineer, to design at a system and component level to meet next generation machine requirements.  The mechanical engineer will spend the majority of their time working on designing next-generation processing equipment and will be expected to leverage their prior work experience to design robust and efficient mechanical systems.

The ideal candidate would be an individual familiar with textile or plastic processing equipment, with a minimum of five years prior work experience designing systems, components, and system subassemblies. Candidate must be flexible regarding scheduling and willing to work weekends as required to support production activities and project deadlines. This is a full-time position, requiring at least 40 hours per week. WEAV3D participates in E-Verify and applicants will be required to pass a criminal background check if a job offer is made.

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Design and integrate mechanical systems to convert novel machine concepts to reality for the next generation machine prototype.
  • Coordinate system designs with other members of the design team including engineers, technicians, and operators to ensure successful integration of electrical and mechanical systems.
  • Review existing machine designs to identify flaws and inefficiencies, and develop strategies for mitigation on next generation and existing equipment.
  • Use Solidworks 3D CAD system to create mechanical assemblies, parts, and drawings.
  • Design mechanical and electromechanical assemblies using design for manufacturing (DFM) and design for assembly (DFA) principles including tolerance analysis and evaluation of external and machine generated environmental conditions.
  • Develop detailed fabrication and assembly drawings, perform tolerances analysis and design studies.
  • Perform safety risk analysis and develop risk mitigations based on those analysis.
  • Maintain product and company reputation by complying with federal and state regulations, industry standards, and engineering best practices.
  • Generate and review mechanical drawings and models for use in manufacturing, including sheet metal, machining, and welding operations.
  • Manage mechanical cost estimates, bill of materials, and maintain project budget and schedule.
  • Prototype and test mechanical components and subsystems, integrating the finalized designs onto the machine and operating the machine to evaluate performance, fit, and reliability.
  • Test, troubleshoot, and resolve mechanical manufacturing and assembly failures using effective troubleshooting methods.
  • Prepare and submit design packages and/or design change orders for design review in collaboration with other team members.
  • Develop and maintain documentation for all WEAV3D mechanical systems, including both physical design journals and digital file repositories.
  • Write and review maintenance schedules and standard operating procedures in conjunction with the process engineering team and other relevant individuals.
  • Safely operate electromechanical systems and machinery in accordance with company safety rules and regulations.
  • Accurately report billable hours by project to comply with federal project accounting rules.
  • Work independently with a high level of accuracy to complete assigned projects on time.
  • Balance tasks and priorities as business needs fluctuate and communicate those priorities with the remainder of the team.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or mechanical engineering technology, preference for programs with an emphasis on machine design, advanced computer aided design, and robotics.
  • Significant work experience and demonstrated mastery as a mechanical engineer, designing machinery components and subassemblies.
  • At least 3 years of experience as project lead or co-lead.
  • Strong preference for work experience in the field of textile machinery and/or plastic processing machinery.
  • Strong preference for aptitude and work experience with troubleshooting and failure analysis.
  • Strong proficiency with Solidworks, evidenced through certification, prior work references, or in-person aptitude test.
  • Knowledge of mechanical design rules and manufacturing methods for machine components.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office.
  • Proficiency with hand tools.
  • Aptitude for math, problem-solving, computers, and mechanical systems, demonstrated by past work experience and/or hobbies.
  • Good communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Attention to detail.
  • Willing and able to perform repetitive and physically demanding activities including:
    • Long periods of time seated in front of computer workstation
    • Lifting material spools and machine components (up to 50 pounds).
    • Physically assembly machines, assemblies, etc. (fine motor skills).
    • Moving under and around machinery for inspection and installation tasks.
